01Before you arrive
Book your free trial through Hidden Gym — it takes two minutes. Wear athletic clothes you can move in (t-shirt and shorts or leggings) and bring water. That's it. Gloves and pads are provided for trial classes, so don't buy anything.
Arrive 15 minutes early. You'll sign the waiver at the front desk, meet whoever's working, and they'll walk you to the mat and introduce you to the coach. You will not be left standing awkwardly by the door wondering what to do. We've done this a few thousand times.
02Minute by minute: what the class actually looks like
First 10–15 minutes: warm-up. Jogging, movement drills, maybe some shadowboxing or mat movements depending on the class. Go at your own pace — nobody is grading your cardio on day one, and resting when you need to is normal and expected.
Next 25–30 minutes: technique. The coach demonstrates one or two fundamental movements, breaks them into steps, then you drill them — on a bag or pads in striking classes, with a cooperative partner in grappling classes. Your partner will almost always be an experienced member, because our regulars know their job is to make your first day good.
Last 10–15 minutes: light drilling or conditioning, then a quick cool-down. The coach will check in with you, answer questions, and tell you honestly which class to come to next.
03The things you're worried about (that won't happen)
You will not spar. Not on day one, not ever unless you eventually choose to. Sparring at Mezger Martial Arts is optional and invitation-based — it's been Guy's rule for 30 years, and most members never spar at all.
You will not be the only beginner. Fundamentals classes are majority-beginner by design. You will not be laughed at, tested, or thrown to the wolves — a gym culture where beginners get hurt is a gym that dies, and ours has been running for three decades.
You will not be trapped by a sales pitch. You'll leave with a plan and a membership offer from Hidden Gym. Take it or think about it. The class was free either way.
04The only hard part is walking in
Ask any member: the hardest rep of their martial arts career was opening the front door the first time. By the third class, the gym feels normal. By the third month, it feels like yours. Pick a location — Richardson or North Dallas — pick any fundamentals class off the schedule, and come find out how unremarkable and how good a first class actually is.
The first class answers everything else.
