The Story
How Guy Got Here
Guy Mezger came up in an era with no gloves, no weight classes, and no excuses. He won the Ultimate Fighting Championship tournament, was three times crowned King of Pancrase — Japan's World Free Fighting title — and fought the sport's legends in PRIDE FC while mixed martial arts was being invented in real time. Along the way he also took world titles in kickboxing and full-contact karate: five world titles in four separate full-contact sports.
But ask Guy what he's proudest of and he won't mention a belt. For more than 30 years he has taught martial arts in North Texas — training 6 world champions and 8 national champions, along with thousands of everyday students, kids as young as five, civil and federal law enforcement, and US military Special Forces units. He served as a Defensive Tactics Instructor for the Dallas Police Academy and as a hand-to-hand combat consultant to the Department of Defense.
He holds a 7th degree black belt, a PhD in holistic health, and inductions into the Texas, Masters, IMAA, and Universal Martial Arts Halls of Fame. He was named Martial Arts Instructor of the Year (2001) and ranked among the Top 50 All-Time Greatest MMA Fighters by Elite Fighter Magazine. Today he leads Mezger Martial Arts inside Hidden Gym, teaching the way he wishes he'd been taught: technique over ego, safety over bravado, and respect on and off the mat.
Favorite class to teach: Fundamentals — the class where people surprise themselves.
